Annual Luck Forecast (流年)

See how the energy of each year interacts with your Bazi chart. A reflective guide to the years ahead, grounded in Chinese metaphysical tradition.

This forecast explores symbolic and elemental interactions between your natal chart and the annual pillar. It is offered for cultural reflection only, not as a prediction of specific events. Use it as one lens among many.

How to Read Your Annual Forecast

In Bazi, each calendar year carries its own Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch, forming the annual pillar (流年). This pillar layers over your fixed natal chart each year, adding a new elemental energy to the field. The annual pillar does not replace your natal chart. It activates, suppresses, harmonises with, or clashes against what is already there.

The Heavenly Stem of the annual year relates to your Day Master through the Ten Gods system. This gives the stem a role: Eating God energy in a given year signals a creative, expressive period; Seven Killings energy signals a more pressured, sharpening quality; Direct Wealth rewards diligence and practical effort. The Branch Ten God shown uses the primary hidden stem of the annual branch, which often carries a subtler or underlying energy to the year.

Branch clashes and harmonies are not omens. A clash between the annual branch and one of your natal pillars is activation: things move, shift, and come to the surface. The pillar being clashed tells you where this tends to show up. A Day Pillar clash activates personal and relational themes. A Month Pillar clash activates career and social environment. Harmonies suggest ease and alignment in those same areas. Three-way combinations tend to transform the energy of both branches into something new. None of these are fixed outcomes. They are tendencies worth reflecting on.

The luck pillar decade provides the backdrop. Each ten-year luck pillar brings a sustained elemental quality to your chart. The annual year operates within that decade context. A year with Direct Officer energy, for example, will feel different in a Resource decade than it does in a Seven Killings decade. Reading them together gives a richer picture than either one alone. This tool is a reflective starting point, grounded in classical tradition, and offered for cultural interest. It is not fate, prediction, or advice of any kind.

How Does the Annual Forecast Calculator Work?

The calculator first builds your natal Four Pillars chart from your birth date, time, and place, which fixes your Day Master. It then computes the annual pillar for the year you select, the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch that classical practice assigns to that year. The forecast comes from reading the annual pillar against your natal chart on three levels. The stem of the year relates to your Day Master through the Ten Gods, giving the year a character such as expressive, pressured, or steadily rewarding. The branch of the year is checked against each of your four natal branches for clashes, harmonies, and three way combinations, and the pillar involved indicates the area of life where activity tends to appear. Your current ten year luck pillar supplies the backdrop against which the year is read. The five phase generating and controlling cycles that drive these readings are set out in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on wuxing.

How Should You Use This Result?

The forecast describes tendencies, not events. A clash is not a warning and a harmony is not a guarantee. In this tradition a clash indicates activation, meaning something in that area of life becomes more present, which can be welcome or difficult depending on circumstances you understand better than any chart does. Use the reading as a set of questions about where to place attention this year. One boundary matters for accuracy. Zi Ping Bazi begins the year at Li Chun, the solar term marking the start of spring around February 4, not at Chinese New Year. This applies both to your natal Year Pillar and to which annual pillar governs a given date. Nothing in this forecast is fate, medical, financial, or investment advice.

What Is the Cultural Background?

The annual pillar method belongs to Zi Ping Bazi, the form of Four Pillars reading consolidated during the Song dynasty and refined through Ming and Qing commentaries. Its underlying premise, that time itself carries qualities describable through stems, branches, and the five phases, comes from a correlative cosmology systematised much earlier. Reading the year against a natal chart remains common across Chinese communities, typically as a reflective annual check rather than a schedule of fixed outcomes. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on Chinese metaphysics gives the broader philosophical setting.
