- ◆System: Eight Mansions (八宅風水). The Kua number links each person to one of the eight trigrams (八卦), which in turn assigns them four favourable and four unfavourable compass directions.
- ◆Year boundary: The same Li Chun (立春, ~February 4) boundary used by the Bazi calculator. People born before Li Chun in a given year use the prior astrological year. This ensures consistency with the broader system.
- ◆Formula (born before 2000): Reduce the astrological year to a single digit by summing digits. Male: 10 minus that digit. Female: that digit plus 5, reduced to a single digit. Kua 5 is replaced by 2 (male) or 8 (female).
- ◆Formula (born 2000 and later): Same digit reduction. Male: 9 minus that digit. Female: that digit plus 6, reduced to a single digit. Kua 5 is still replaced by 2 (male) or 8 (female).
- ◆Spot checks: Male born 28 March 1994 (astro year 1994): 1+9+9+4 = 23, 2+3 = 5, 10 - 5 = 5, replaced with Kua 2. Male born 10 April 2001 (astro year 2001): 2+0+0+1 = 3, 9 - 3 = Kua 6. Female born 1 February 1980 (before Li Chun, so astro year 1979): 1+9+7+9 = 26, 2+6 = 8, 8+5 = 13, 1+3 = Kua 4.
- ◆East and West groups: Kua 1, 3, 4, 9 form the East Group (東四命). Kua 2, 6, 7, 8 form the West Group (西四命). East group people are said to benefit from East group directions; West group from West group directions.
- ◆What this is not: A professional feng shui consultation. The Eight Mansions system is one method among many in feng shui, and its practical application involves far more than compass directions alone. Use this as cultural orientation and a starting point for your own reflection.
