Your Kua number reflects compass direction. Your Bazi chart reflects the elemental profile of your birth date and time. They are separate but complementary systems.

- ◆System: This tool uses the Eight Mansions system (八宅風水). The Kua number links each person to one of the eight trigrams (八卦). Each trigram points toward four favourable compass directions and four to be aware of.
- ◆Year boundary: The year boundary matches the Bazi calculator. In Chinese astrology, the year changes at Li Chun (立春, around February 4), not January 1. People born before Li Chun use the previous astrological year.
- ◆Formula (born before 2000): Take the last two digits of the astrological year and add them together. If the result is still two digits, add again until you get a single digit. For male: 10 minus that digit. For female: that digit plus 5, reduced to one digit if needed. Kua 5 becomes 2 for males or 8 for females.
- ◆Formula (born 2000 and later): Same digit reduction as above. For male: 9 minus that digit. For female: that digit plus 6, reduced if needed. Kua 5 still becomes 2 (male) or 8 (female).
- ◆Spot checks: Male born 17 January 1974 (before Li Chun, astro year 1973): last two digits 73, 7+3=10, 1+0=1, 10-1=9 → Kua 9. Male born 28 March 1994 (astro year 1994): last two digits 94, 9+4=13, 1+3=4, 10-4=6 → Kua 6. Male born 10 April 2001 (astro year 2001): last two digits 01, 1, 9-1=8 → Kua 8. Female born 1 February 1980 (before Li Chun, astro year 1979): last two digits 79, 7+9=16, 1+6=7, 7+5=12, 1+2=3 → Kua 3.
- ◆East and West groups: Kua 1, 3, 4, and 9 belong to the East Group (東四命). Kua 2, 6, 7, and 8 belong to the West Group (西四命). People in the East Group are traditionally said to benefit from East group directions. West group people from West group directions.
- ◆What this is not: This is not a professional feng shui consultation. Eight Mansions is one method among many. Applying it in real life involves a lot more than compass directions alone. Use this as cultural orientation and a starting point for reflection.
